Encyclopedia Of Life, One Page For Each Specie

by mindhacker on November 11, 2009

The Encyclopedia of life, EOL is an online organization which aims to put every species of every organism alive  on the web in a central database with free access to anyone. Their site description goes like “Imagine an electronic page for each species of organism on Earth…” – Edward O. Wilson. That sure is a noble aim. EOL aims to develop online pages for about a million species within the next five years (good luck). Each page consists of the bilological name of the specie (always weird) and a brief description about it’s ecology, evolution and habitat along with references to further information, most of which are under a creative common license. EOL also has an amazing flickr group to collect images. As of now it has nearly 40,000 images of species and each one of them is spectacular. Also most of them are also under a creative common’s license so you can freely share them. Do try to help this group out as they’re doing a great job.
