With the current financial crunch and current games requiring us to shell out quiet a bit our gaming needs have taken a back seat to other priorities. Still it doesn’t need to be all work and no play and neither do we have to turn to piracy to get our ‘fix’. So here we present you with some free games out there.
SS2 is one of my all time favourite games. It’s pretty old now though. The concept is simple and the gameplay is fast and fun. The variety of weapons, extras and creative ways in which your stick soldier can die is great. I love the one in which your head gets shot off and you bleed to death. Have a look at this one and i’m sure you’ll enjoy this.

Battlefield Heroes is EAs venture into free to play territory. Before this the only other FPS that i used to play was TF2 but now this has started to take out a large chunk of my gaming time. This game is more light hearted than the other battlefield games and indeed most of the other FPSes out there. Its emphasis is not so much on hard skill as it is on fun. The game follows a free to play line. It’s funded by microtransactions in the form of clothes etc and advertising on the games website.
The transactions don’t really give an edge to the player but rather serves to customize the players character. At present the game is in open beta so there are a few limitations. The one that’ll get to you is that there are only 4 maps. Though these four are pretty big and will keep you engaged for quiet a while. Who says EA is all evil?

Frets on fire is a free to play guitar hero/rock band sort of game. You can use your keyboard to rock out or better yet you could fork over a little money to buy the guitar hero kit. I played this game with the guitar hero drum kit. An even better thing about frets on fire is that you can add your own songs to it and rock out to them.

This one falls in the SimCity category. I didn’t really like this at first but as I played along it really grew on me. The aim of the game is simple, either build a city with a sustainable economy or evacuate all citizens on spaceships (that’s a bit too much DC-8 reference for me ;-) ).

Honestly speaking I havent played Yo!Frankie yet. But from what I’ve heard this is a really cool game. It’s based on the Blender Game Engine. There is some light humor in there as well and with an active online community new levels are being added regularly.

I’ll definitely get around to checking this one out soon. Till then let us know what you think.
With it’s blend of cell shaded graphics and fast gameplay is pretty cool FPS. Completely free to play for windows, linux and mac OS the game puts players in control of ‘rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks’.
With developers using Quake, Speedball and Jet Set Radio as their inspiration they have come up with a game mix that works out pretty well. It comes with a variety of standard game types such as Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Duel and Clan Arena. You can also make your own gametypes.

There are a lot of others that i haven’t gotten around to playing as yet. But from the reviews I’ve read the following are most probably worth checking out as well (each game is accompanied by a screen shot as well):
VDrift. The name should say it all really. Adriving game with emphasis on drifting. The online community has created quiet a big car library.

SpringEngine. They have a lot of different RTS games to download on their site. The world war RTS, Spring :1944 looks interesting.
