Repairing The Display Problem in HP dv2000/dv6000 series

PROBLEM

Last week when I turned on my laptop HP dv2750, there were multiple screens appearing on the display instead of one screen, and some times the screen even didn’t appear. I reinstalled and updated the nvidia drivers (as it has nvidia 8400GM) assuming something might be wrong with the drivers, but when the notebook restarted the multiple screens appeared right from the time it restarted, i.e. there were six boot screens, instead of one. I logged on to the HP website and updated my bios, but the problem didn’t solve. I ran the system restore, but that was also useless. I searched for the problem on the net and found that there is a die-packaging manufacturing defect in nvidia GPU of G84 and G86 which was officially announced by NVIDIA. These nvidia GPU are in most of dv2000/dv6000 series of HP pavilion laptops

Solution:

My laptop’s warranty expired last and was also not covered by HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement. I talked to HP, they confirmed it as a hardware malfunctioning of nvidia GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), but refused to repair it free of cost (estimated cost by HP was $300+shipping charges). I being a student couldn’t afford that much. As I was out off options so I decided to get it repaired locally.

The local techinian immediately identified the problem. Actually the problem is in the Ball Grid Array (BGA) of Nvidia GPU. With the passage of time (approximately 1 year), the Ball Grid Array Soldering of the GPU gets damaged due to heating. When it gets damaged, some pins of the GPU loses the contact with the motherboard, and hence displays nothing. The local technician told that there are two methods to repair it

  1. Temporary Repair
  2. Permanent Repair

Temporary Repair

In temporary repair he would air heat the GPU, as a result the soldering balls in BGA would get settled and connections would be re-established, but the problem may show up again in a week or a month.

Permanent Repair

The permanent repair was more risky then the temporary one. There is 80% chance of getting it permanently repaired and 20% chance of permanent damage. I took the risk and finally the problem was resolved. In this repair the GPU was be detached (Desoldered) from the motherboard, and the new balls were  made for BGA and the GPU was again fixed to the motherboard. When the laptop was turned on, the problem was actually resolved. The technician told that he has repaired many dv2000/dv6000 notebooks with the same problem, and none have reported the issue to him again.

BGA

Ball Grid Array are surface mount packages (smd) that uses metal balls and spheres to provide electrical interconnection

The problem is the same as reported in XBOX 360’s GPU’s  BGA. Another BGA is shown below

ok. I have the same problum in Hp SV2610TX model but i don't have heating gun, can i try it thru soldering iron, but how can i detached that green IC, can i make dry with the help of soldering iron.
  • yasir
Heating through soldering gun will be useless as heating will not be uniform and it will only heat the surface of IC and not BGA. The purpose of heating is to get the heat to the balls of Ball Grid Array (BGA) which is possible through the use of heat gun.

I didn't detach the IC myself. It was the technician who detached it. He told that there is some kind of special glue around the IC. Even at high temperature the glue is so strong that the IC does not come out easily. He actually cut that glue with a pin and then heated the IC so that the balls in BGA melt and IC comes out. also there is a chance that the tracks on the motherboard might break while detaching the IC , rendering permanent damage to the motherboard.

    Hi Yasir,

Thanks a lot for your information. I also have HP Pavilion 2700 CTO and facing the same issue. Can you please let me know the technician contact details and how much he charged for repairing this problem?

yasir please help me. I'm barely a 16 year old with one of those hp2000 recalls.
And i am also a student with lots of work to do on my laptop. What do u suggest?
I don't think i can really afford any technician. Maybe info about ur technician might help.
But i am really scared to really go spend money anywhere.

    Thanks,
    David
  • yasir
I understand the frustration as a student, david, I have given the technician information in the 5th comment above.
I also found another solution from some other forum which states

"I had the same problem with my HP DV6599. On power on the screen would stay black, no POST, nothing at all on the display. The HDD would spin up but the HDD indicator would not come on and would not boot. The DVD drive would spin up and attempt to read a disc if one was in the tray but still would not boot. I found an answer on another forum. Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. It worked for me! Just shutdown, put the battery back in you're good to go. Worked for me so definitely worth a try."

This trick has worked for lots of people. Hope it works for you.

Ok, I have a dv2637tx witht the same issue. After I have read the comments here, I have turned my laptop on and made it get very hot... sudely it started to work. I am pressuming it would be the temporary fix. Once I could launch windows, I have disabled Nividia forcig windows to run on standard mode (which it would not use the video memory and mempry from board I presume), this way apparently makes the laptop less hot. No sure if whatever I did is the reason why I got my laptop wotking fine so far, I am not a IT expert, but I hope it helps in something.
    Cheers

I had the same problem with the HP DV5, power would go in, but i could get no response at all,the only light on would be where the power cord goes in.I tried the suggestion from above with the battery removal and holding down the power button for 30-60 seconds, reconnecting & then re-booting and lo-&behold we have ignition.Does anyone know what this problem is and what is causing it? I really thought the lappy was stuffed.
  • shayd
yasir just a quick question do i have to strip the motherboard completly out of the case
or can i just heat the gpu with a heat gun for few minutes for a temp fix ?
  • yasir
you can heat it in the casing , but ensure that you don't heat other ic's except for nvidia GPU
  • Luiz
Hi, I realy felt happy when I saw this blog saying that is possible to recover this nvidia issue. I live in Brazil and HP Brazil said that they don't support any hardware problem. Also, I contact hp USA and they said that they will not solution this because it's out of warranty. I would change my motherboard set, but it would cost me at about 1000 dólars, including taxes and whatever.
So, I really beg Yasir, if you could teach us ( stupids that bought hp products and were fucked from them) how to do this desoldering. If you tell the equipments used, the methology applied and some pictures of how to reconect the graphics processor, you would do a favor not only to me, but to a whole country that are facing major problems than only this display problem - lack of support and desire of the company to help their consumers. My hp product is a dv2740 se and it is out of their recall program. Reading informations at others blogs, they said that hp dind't put some model to the recall program because they sold a lot of this equipment, in which they would probably face a big loss in their budget.
  • yasir
Luiz, thank you for the appreciation. actually i didn't repair the nvidia gpu myself. a technician expert in this field did it. his contact details r given in the above comments. may be he can help you out.
